Domain renewals

Domain renewal pricing should be fair and transparent. At Krystal, the price you renew at is the price we told you on day one.

Many registrars advertise cheap domains at registration only to raise the price steeply when renewal comes around. A .com domain name that cost £1 to register might renew at £15 or more.

We don’t do that. Every domain extension at Krystal is priced the same for registration and renewal. No introductory discounts. No inflated second-year charges. You know what your domain name renewal will cost before you register, and that figure does not change.

How domain name renewal works

Domain name renewal is the process of extending your right to use a domain name, such as yourbusiness.co.uk, after its registration period ends. The initial registration period can last anywhere from 1-10 years. After that, you’ll need to pay a renewal fee.

You can renew a domain registered with Krystal in two ways: automatically or manually. Whichever you choose, the cost to renew your domain will be the same as what you paid to register it.

  • Auto-renew

Switch on auto-renew for any domain in your Client area, and we take care of the rest. Simply click on the domain to manage its settings, navigate to the Auto Renew tab and click ‘Manage auto renewal settings’.

We raise an invoice at least seven days before the expiry date and attempt payment from your stored card on the day renewal falls due. If payment goes through, you’ll receive a confirmation, and the domain continues without interruption.

Auto-renew requires a valid credit or debit card on file. If you pay by PayPal or bank transfer, we will still raise the invoice, but you’ll need to log in and complete the payment yourself before the domain expires.

You can turn auto-renew on or off at any time, per domain, from your dashboard. See how to manage auto-renewal settings for more information.

  • Manual renew

If you don’t want to use auto-renew, you can renew your domain name manually. In your Client area, you can view the renewal date next to each of your domains.

We’ll send you a reminder email before the expiry date. You can then log in, review the invoice and pay when you are ready.

If you miss the reminders and the domain expires, recovery becomes more difficult and more expensive. Make sure the email address on your account is one that you monitor regularly so that you don’t miss the reminder.

What happens if a domain expires

  • Grace period (approximately 45 days)

After a domain expires, you can still renew it at the normal price for around 45 days. The domain is still yours and the renewal charge is the same as it would have been before expiry.

Your Krystal invoice stays open for the first 30 days. After that, the invoice is cancelled and you will need to contact our support team directly to renew.

  • Redemption period

Once the grace period ends, the domain enters what is called the redemption period. You can still recover the domain, but the cost increases significantly. Redemption fees are set by the upstream registry, not by Krystal, and can run into hundreds of pounds depending on the extension.

If your domain reaches this stage, contact us and we can outline the recovery options and costs.

  • Pending delete

After redemption, the domain enters a pending delete period. At this point, recovery is no longer possible. The domain is eventually released and becomes available for anyone to register.

If no-one has registered the domain since it was wiped, you can register it again.
